Founded in 2009, KAUST is a new international, graduate-level private research university. As an independent, merit-based institution, KAUST enables top researchers from around the globe and across all cultures to work together to solve the most challenging scientific and technological problems. The Computer, Electrical and Mathematical Sciences and Engineering (CEMSE) Division hosts around 50 professors and over 100 postdocs and research scientists. The Software-Defined Advanced Networked and Distributed Systems (SANDS) laboratory, led by Prof. Marco Canini maintains world-renowned expertise for research on Software-Defined Networking. It brings to the project a strong expertise in Software-Defined Networking and in the development of new protocols and mechanisms to improve network management and operation (Canini et al., 2013, 2012; Kuzniar et al., 2012; Levin et al., 2013; Reitblatt et al., 2013). SANDS has access to various types of equipment including a dedicated networking lab that includes 8 multicore networked servers. Also, SANDS actively collaborates with leading SDN researchers including Jennifer Rexford (Princeton University) and Nate Foster (Cornell University).
